The Huski 5SDK9 with a 730 kg lift capacity and a high-flow option is Toyota's flagship skidsteer loader.
Compact skidsteers capable
of operating in tight spaces are
becoming increasingly prevalent on construction sites due
to the versatile range of functions and productivity benefits
that they offer. Manufacturers
are recognising the importance
of catering for this important
market segment. An example is
the launch by Manitou Australia of the all-new super-
compact Gehl model 1640E
skid loader which is manufactured in the US and measures
910 mm wide and 1,900 mm
tall.
Manitou general manger,
Stuart Walker, points out that
there are few places this
machine can’t access. “It is
ideal for manoeuvring through
alleys, narrow doorways, aisles
and corridors and, despite its
size, this machine is powerful
with a 24 hp Yanmar diesel
engine. Another advantage is
that the overall weight of only
1,352 kg makes the 1640E easy
to transport,” Walker said.
“With a 385 kg operating
load capacity and 2.44m lift
height, the 1640E is a true
multi-tasker with 35 l/min of
auxiliary hydraulic flow for
powering a variety of compact
attachments. The universal-
style quick-attach system
makes attachment changes
quick and easy. This
machine’s hydraulic system
has a direct-drive hydrostatic
pump with a self-neutralising
feature that provides 100 per
cent efficient drive from
engine to pump and requires
no maintenance.”

The super-compact US-manufactured Gehl 1640E is a multi-tasker with 35 l/min of auxiliary hydraulic flow to power a variety of attachments.
Manitou has also released a
new V270 skidsteer with a
powerful 84 hp Yanmar turbo-
diesel engine and an operating
load capacity of 1,225 kg.
Walker says the V270 offers
more than 3,310 mm of lift
height, and the high-flow auxiliary hydraulics option is de
signed to
handle
virtually
every high-
performance
attachment.
New Huski range
Toyota Material Handling Australia has launched a new Huski
5SDK skidsteer range with five
models that have operating
load capacities from 320 kg to
900 kg. The range, that
includes two model choices not
available in the predecessor
4SDK range, spans from the
carry-over 4SDK4 model with
an operating load rating of 320
kg, up to the range-topping
new 5SDK11 with an operating
load rating of 900 kg.
The company’s Toyota
product brand manager, Bob
Walmsley, says buyers can also
opt for the Huski 5SDK5 with
an operating load rating of 430
kg, the 5SDK8 (650 kg),
5SDK9 (730 kg) or the 5SDK10
(820 kg). “Key features of the
5SDK range include a
redesigned cabin offering significantly increased room, reduced
noise and vibration levels, and
digital meters for quick fuel, oil
and engine temperature monitoring. The 5SDK8 and larger
models now have short stroke,
low effort steering and auxiliary
control levers, and a factory-
fitted high flow option is now
available on the 5SDK9 and
larger models,” Walmsley said.
“This is the first time that we
have offered a 730 kg lift
capacity (5SDK9) skidsteer in
this country. The new Huski
5SDK9 is Toyota’s flagship
skidsteer loader, with a longer
wheelbase, larger Toyota 3.5
litre 2Z diesel engine, and
greater lift capacity than the
top-selling 4SDK8.
“At the same time however,
the Huski range continues to
cater for those contractors that
require a compact machine,
such as the 4SDK4, with its
900 mm wide bucket, 1,825
mm height and operating
weight of just 1,120 kg to deal
with sites that have restricted
access, tight operating condi
tions, and are soft underfoot.”
Trenchers for skidsteers
Trenchers are recognised as one
of the most versatile attachments for skidsteers as they can
be quickly fitted via a frame.

The Bigfoot trenchers with planetary drive are suitable for use with skidsteers and incorporate an adjustable skid-foot on one side.
Digga offer two ranges of
trenchers: the Bigfoot (three
models) and the Hydrive (two
models). Company managing
director, Suzie Wright, says the
compact yet powerful Bigfoot
trenchers with planetary drive
are particularly suitable for use
with skidsteers.
“These trencher attachments
feature an adjustable skid-foot
on one side to allow the oper
ator to maintain a consistent
digging depth, and a single
spoil removal auger on the
other for efficient spoil removal
to one side of the trench.
“The standard and mini
Bigfoot are fitted with a
15/8-inch pitch digging chain
suitable for machines up to
3.5t,” she said. “The unique feature of
adjusting the foot on the side of
the trencher allows multiple
fixed trench depths to be
achieved by simply undoing two
side bolts and moving the selection holes to the desired depth.
“This makes it very easy for
the inexperienced operator to
create a straight trench with consistent depth, which is important,
especially when trenching to lay
electrical lines or pipework that
must meet council regulations.”
