The first trains rolled through the new Platform 5 at Hornsby in mid-March. It marked the end of construction on the Hornsby Platform 5 and Stabling Project which Laing O'Rourke built on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation.

Nearly 5,000 people worked on the project, which took a total of 40 months, working more than 690,000 man hours. The $85 million project had a 1000-day LTI (lost time without injury) period, a testament to the high emphasis on safety for the project.

Works on the multi-disciplined project included a new platform on the western side of Platform 5, 2.95 km of new track laid, one kilometre of new signal cable, 4.2 km of overhead wiring and two substations, new rail bridges and road widening at Pretoria Parade and the Pacific Highway and 3,400 sqm of new car parks.

There is also an upgraded bus interchange, which improves security for passengers and will assist in their connections between the different transport modes.
