ASTA Powerproject Enterprise, a project management software solution designed for large construction projects, has been chosen to underpin a major construction programme within the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER) programme. It was selected by Hansen Yuncken, to support its $414 million construction and refurbishment contract for South Western Sydney region.

BER is part of the $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan – an investment to provide world-class educational facilities to primary and secondary schools across the country. It is due for completion by December 2010.

The Hansen Yuncken programme presents a huge information and resource management task. Collecting and collating project information from around 180 planners and project managers is exacerbated by the wide geographic distribution of construction projects. The challenges of each individual project are highly unique, especially on occupied school sites. An even bigger challenge is presenting that information to many management and government stakeholders.

Andrew Campbell, construction manager at Hansen Yuncken explains: “Our programme covers 309 projects at 204 schools, and although the majority of this is building new facilities such as new halls, libraries, classrooms and administration blocks we also have more than $100 million worth of refurbishments to existing facilities, which applies to around one third of the programmes.”

To cope with such complexity and scale they recognised that they would need a highly capable solution configured in a bespoke way. Hansen Yuncken chose Asta Powerproject Enterprise and a team from Asta Development which could work with Programme Management consultants Solid Support to create the solution that was required. Asta Powerproject Enterprise is deployed over Citrix to provide real-time multi-user access and reporting capabilities.
