Despite the global financial crisis, a report from the Mackay Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation shows economic conditions in the region remain strong.
The corporation's chief executive officer, Narelle Pearse, says the area's gross regional product has been growing strongly over the past five years.
It increased by $500 million to $15.4 billion for the 2007-2008 period as compared to the previous year.
Pearse says many industries including construction are performing well and this is helping diversify the region's economic base.
"What we've seen is other industries growing at a higher rate which obviously means our economy is better diversified,” she says.
