The University of Sydney law building includes several industry leading green features.
Baulderstone’s Faculty of Law & Public Domain project for the University of Sydney has won the Master Builders Association NSW Excellence in Construction Award for Tertiary Buildings over $25,000,001.

The building includes several industry leading green features such as chilled beams, low VOC materials, timber sourced from sustainable forests, an on-site rainwater reuse system, and Building Management Controls System fully integrated with all building services. Unique features include the Light Tower and the Faculty Building composite cavity façade system.

The Faculty of Law is part of the University of Sydney’s Campus 2010 project, which is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the University to date. The building has many innovative features; amongst those is the first ever glass triple skinned façade to be built in Australia and a 20m high light tower.

At the heart of the new Law School is a library which is below ground level. There are five levels of teaching spaces (sixteen 60-seat seminar rooms, four 100-seat lecture theatres, a 300-seat auditorium, a moot court with state of the art audio visual systems), post graduate research spaces and faculty offices.

Baulderstone general manager for NSW/ACT, David Lougher, said the awards reflect the quality and innovation used on this exciting project. “The success of this project reflects the commitment of the entire team who are all very proud to have been part of this landmark project. Baulderstone has leveraged its considerable expertise in technically complex projects to create an iconic building that will surely be instantly recognisable and synonymous with the University of Sydney.”

A collaborative approach was taken between Baulderstone, the engineers and the architect, FJMT, to achieve a high quality teaching facility. Construction was completed in a tight 90 week program in time for the start of the March 2009 semester.

The building was a finalist in the 2009 Engineering Excellence Awards in the Building & Structures Division (joint entrant with Taylor Thomson Whitting who was the structural engineer on the project). Other awards for this project include a High Commendation in both the NSW and National Australian Institute of Building Professional Excellence in Building Awards for Project Manager, Paul Allsop.
